The L70 is a low-flow CNG pressure reduction system designed for applications that require controlled gas letdown from high-pressure compressed natural gas (CNG) storage to a lower, more manageable delivery pressure. Often referred to as a stepdown unit or letdown station, the L70 handles the critical process of CNG decompression safely and efficiently.
Compressed Natural Gas is stored in pressure vessels at pressures up to 3,600 PSI. Before it can be used in downstream equipment, generators, or pipeline systems, that pressure must be reduced — or "stepped down" — to a more manageable level. This process is called pressure letdown, pressure stepdown, or CNG decompression. The L70 PRS performs this stepdown precisely, delivering gas at the exact outlet pressure required by the application.
When gas undergoes rapid pressure reduction, the Joule-Thompson effect causes a significant drop in temperature. This cooling can lead to freezing of sensitive instruments and downstream piping if not properly managed. The L70 system is engineered to account for these thermal dynamics, ensuring reliable operation even in extreme conditions as low as -40°F.
The L70 plays a key role in virtual pipeline operations — where CNG is transported by trailer to locations not served by traditional pipeline infrastructure. Once on site, the L70 stepdown unit decompresses the gas from transport pressure to the delivery pressure needed for the end-use application, effectively creating a virtual gas pipeline anywhere it's needed.
